Just for Fun

4K video from an aerial inspection of JD's neighborhood in Baton Rouge, LA. No violations of social distancing seen. His Yuneec Typhoon H lost video transmission to the controller at a relatively meager 1,407 feet out. Must be a lot of folks home for quarantine crowding the WiFi frequencies. And it might have helped to use the directional patch antenna rather than the omni-directional "mushroom." The video captured by the onboard SD card was just fine throughout, of course. That's what you see here.

JD spent May Day 2020 down by the river, but not in a van. He drove his Chevy to the levee and the levee was (mostly) dry. He had his Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter fly out over the mighty Mississippi River briefly just downriver from Baton Rouge. Tug and barge traffic was too far away to wait for, so he flew over to the pasture across River Road from the levee to see if he could have an aerial look at the horses and cows without causing a stampede. 4K video. JD takes his Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter down the street with the Yuneec Wizard one-hand controller. It looks like a TV remote, but contains its own GPS so it can tell the drone where it is. In Watch Me mode, the drone can follow the controller and keep the camera pointed at it. With Obstacle Avoidance and RealSense® turned on, the drone can find its own way around trees and streetlights with no help from the pilot. And "Point-to-Fly" allows pointing the Wizard at a spot in the sky. Just click, and the drone flies itself to that spot. 4K video.

JD sent his drone around his neighborhood on a lovely spring day in Baton Rouge, LA. The usual rooftops were still there, unaffected by the Wuhan virus quarantine. His drone was socially distant from them at roughly 150-200 feet. 4K video from a Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter.

JD walks his pet drone, a Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter in Watch Me mode, on 2/29/2020. 4K video.

Another aerial visit to the ponds at the end of Timber Grove Drive in Baton Rouge. A couple of ducks and a few humans. Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter, 4K video.

4K video from a Yuneec Typhoon 4K hexacopter over the Shenandoah subdivision in Baton Rouge LA on 2/7/2020.

4K video from a flight over one of a few ponds at the end of Timber Grove Dr. in Baton Rouge, 1/25/2020. Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter.

JD captured some 4K video of the tallest tree in his neighborhood being taken down. It was his benchmark when flying his drone. If it was high enough to clear that tree just across the street from his house, it was high enough to clear anything in the neighborhood. Toward the end, he launched his Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter, hoping to uniquely capture a "TIMMMMM-BERRR!" moment from above. But it became clear that the plan was to take the tree down bit-by-bit from the top in a very safe but unexciting fashion.

JD gets in a little drone practice on a beautiful day in the neighborhood. The one pedestrian in the subdivision did her best to try to walk right underneath the flight, but JD swerved a bit to avoid her. The subsequent pickup truck was nice enough to use the wrong side of the street while he watched. 4K video from a Yuneec Typhoon H hexacopter. Baton Rouge, LA.
