Louisiana Congressman Dr. Ralph Abraham, along with Texas Dr. Richard Bartlett, discuss their success with inhaled corticosteroid for their COVID-19 patients with Debbie Georgatos on her TV program, "American, Can We Talk?" The video is hosted on YouTube, so watch it while you can.

Apparently we're very lucky the H1N1 virus was only lethal enough to kill 12,000 Americans, because it infected 60 million of them during the Obama-Biden administration in 2009. That's 54 million more than COVID-19. Where would we be if Biden was President in January of 2020? Would he have repeated the same mistakes? https://cnsnews.com/index.php/blog/john-jakubisin/levin-60-million-americans-got-swine-flu-obama-and-biden-stopped-testing?fbclid=IwAR3EHYA1KAUR4CthIk1J7ypOxKGKh1NkDyvMh1opiIS9JHnf0CISsUwdyF8

This is a real jewel. It's a flashback to my time as a Top 40 Disc Jockey at a 50,000 watt radio station, WPTR back in the early 70s. Yes, I was there with Boom Boom Brannigan. This was an in house spoof done by 4 DJs at a radio station in Middletown NY. It quickly spread (pre internet) like wild fire around the Top 40 radio world. Because it really captured the burgeoning industry of analysts and brainiacs trying to figure out the radio format that would suck you the listener in. Plus it captures all the quirky subculture of being a Top 40 Radio DJ. Echo chambers, stupid patter. Throwing your voice such that it sounds like a strangled chicken. And my favorite which you won't get unless you were there. When you start a turntable, it makes a big thump sound over air, so you have to have the volume pot down. Doing otherwise was a Top 40 Radio DJ no-no. So on with the fun, back to the good old days of Top 40 AM radio.

As an engineer (and DJ), here's my take on masks. First, have a look at this: https://www.edcmag.com/best-face-masks-for-virus-protection/. The video at its very bottom has outdated stats on how many are or have been infected, but summarizes pretty well what the various types of masks can and can't do. Basically, respirator/masks like the N95 and P100 are the only ones that will protect *you* in an environment where virus may be present. Other types, like surgical masks, do not protect you. They may or may not help protect other people from you in case you are infected.
If I'm in public where I'm likely to have people closer to me than six feet, I wear an N95 mask. I've also used the R95 mask, which has identical protection to the N95 mask, but also handles oily particles. As a selfish capitalist, my first interest is protecting myself. Frankly, I think everyone should think the same way. But requiring everyone to think the same way as I do would make me a liberal, right? :-) Wearing a surgical mask or cloth face covering might protect others from me, but why shouldn't they be responsible for their own protection? If they're wearing an ineffective mask, or none at all, they're exercising their freedom to be unconcerned about their own health. Even in a pandemic, this is still America. Protect yourself. Encourage but don't force others to protect themselves, too. The whole idea of wearing a mostly ineffective cloth face covering as a societal responsibility as if we are in a Woodstock utopia is just a bad idea. And, as we've seen, there is a fair number of people eschewing flowers in their hair and masks of any kind. If we're going to use government force to prevent those folks from catching the virus and bringing it home to their elders, let's force them to wear masks that are actually effective against the virus.
This article also points to the CDC Web site for it's mask and other recommendations. Oddly, as this is posted, it goes on at length about cloth face coverings, and still recommends not wearing masks intended for health care workers, whatever those may be. My N95 masks came from a former employer who handed them out to its employees after Hurricane Katrina.

If you're trying to figure out whether or not to wear a mask, as of today (5/29/2020), the CDC says everyone should wear a mask. But the W.H.O. says only sick people (or folks caring for sick people) should wear them. Since Trump just pulled the US out of the W.H.O. today, if you're a Trump-hater, perhaps you should support the W.H.O. by not wearing a mask (if you're healthy). That is all. More info at https://www.wnd.com/2020/05/mask-confusion-now-says-healthy-not-wear/?fbclid=IwAR1IHJYZ52bKAEWXrnWwmCP9Y06qo9FTtR7SaSkqCYTUvBEg7o3Uf1cB09w

College radio buddy Dennis Jackson sent me a cool tribute from CBS Radio on "Radio at 100." I went looking for it on YouTube. I didn't find it, but I did run across this equally cool aircheck of the entire AM radio band recently captured in Eastern Massachusetts. We could hear many of these stations where we went to school in Eastern upstate New York.

I'm posting this for two reasons. First, I saw an ad on TV yesterday (and on many other days) asking for money to "help" polar bears. If you feel they need help, by all means, donate.
Second, as a shareholder, I want Facebook to get out of the slimy fact-checking and censorship business. Either that, or just start running your own ads and editorials advancing your political positions. Let your customers post theirs, untouched. I suppose another option would be to go out of business entirely, but I'd like a little advance warning on that if that is what you decide to do. :-) https://wattsupwiththat.com/2020/05/20/climatefeedback-review-of-prageru-video-challenges-good-news-on-polar-bears/

WaPo headline this morning on MSN: "Why so many people are getting sick nearly 7 weeks into the shutdown." I don't know what they say because I refuse to subscribe or give them my email address. But I'm going to suggest it's because we flattened the curve without necessarily changing the area underneath it. Just as many people may get sick with COVID-19, just later than they would have without the shutdown. Add to that the number of people who will get sick and die from blocked routine medical care for other problems, as well as poverty, a known killer, all resulting from economic destruction.

From today's Rock 'n' Roll Almanac:
48 years ago (1972)--WIXO signs on in New Orleans at 98.5 FM. After a minute or so of elevator music played as an April Fool’s joke, Johnny Winter screams “Rock ’n’ roll!” and the station launches into its format, supposedly a cross between the AM Top 40 of the then #1 station WTIX, and WRNO, the album-oriented FM rocker. Thus, the call letters, WIXO. But with only 54 kilowatts of power from atop the short WVOG antenna tower near the Huey Long Bridge, signal coverage suffers, and the station goes dark less than 2-1/2 years later. https://jdthedj.com/Almanac

I mentioned to my wife last Monday night that we should slap a $30 tariff on the $30 imported oil and use it to save our own oil industry. Finally heard a TV news pundit suggest the same thing the other day. He was gonna settle for $10 a barrel. Economists, I'd love to hear from you. Except Paul Krugman. You're an idiot.

My alma mater, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has shut down all in-person classes for the rest of the month due to COVID-19. The student-run radio station, WRPI, will be off the air for the duration, too. What is so different about COVID-19 and H1N1, which we let kill 1,000 Americans or so back in 2009 before we declared an emergency? Ultimately, it killed about 17,000 Americans, far fewer than what influenza typically kills in a season.

From the late 60's, I vaguely remember Ampex creating a floppy magnetic disc audio recording machine. It used discs akin to those in an 8" floppy disc, but without a jacket. You just toss them into the bed of the machine and you could then record or play back an analog audio recording. Ampex loaned us a machine for evaluation at WRPI. If I recall, they tended to "skip," and handling the jacketless media without getting fingerprints all over them was a problem. Ampex apparently never went into production with them. They're not mentioned at the Ampex History page (https://www.ampex.com/ampex-history/) Am I hallucinating this, or does anyone else here remember seeing one?

Hmmmmm. 1995. The middle of the Clinton Administration. From today's Rock 'n' Roll Almanac:
25 years ago (1995)--Philip Taylor Kramer, bassist for Iron Butterfly in the 70’s and now working in the computer industry, drives to Los Angeles International Airport to pick up an investor. He spends 45 minutes at the airport but fails to meet the investor. He does make a flurry of cell phone calls, including one to the police during which he says, “I’m going to kill myself.” He’s never heard from again. After a massive search, many news reports, and talk show segments including an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, America's Most Wanted, The Unexplained, Unsolved Mysteries and others, his skeleton is found in 1999 in a car wreck at the bottom of Decker Canyon near Malibu, California.

Drone pilots, you're gonna wanna read this Notice of Proposed Rulemaking by the FAA. I've only skimmed through it so far, but my guess is you're not going to like it. It seems that drones you own already without remote identification capabilities (all of mine), will soon be restricted to operating only in FAA-approved, community-based-organization flying areas, such as AMA RC flying fields once the rule is in full effect. Grrrrrr! https://s3.amazonaws.com/public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2019-28100.pdf.

I got to wondering about Elizabeth Warren's wealth tax today. It's an annual tax on wealth, not income. If the value of your net worth exceeds the threshold ($10 million, I think, at least until they decide to lower it to get more revenue), you'd pay something like 2% of it every year, until your estate's value fell below the threshold. You presumably already paid the income tax on all that wealth; now, you just pay the extra 2% on it every year.
So a wealth tax is a direct tax on what is now your property (your net worth). The 16th amendment excluding income taxes from the Constitution's apportionment requirement does not apply to the wealth tax. As a direct tax, the Constitution says it must be apportioned. As it turns out, that's really tough to do for anything but a pure per capita tax (say, $10 per person). Attempting to tax only wealthy people and apportion it by state population would get really messy. A little Web research seems to confirm this. https://thefederalist.com/2019/08/08/heres-elizabeth-warrens-wealth-tax-completely-unconstitutional/

Hey, Joe Biden! Don't apologize! You didn't use the wrong word. It was correct when you used it in a political analogy years ago, and it was correct when Trump used it the same way just the other day.
When I look it up on the Internet today, it is defined exactly as I remember it always being defined:
lynching
n.
The act of executing lynch-law upon a person; the killing of a person by a mob under pretense of summary justice.
n.
Execution of a person by mob action without due process of law, especially hanging
n.
Any act of violence inflicted by a mob upon the body of another person.
Choose any online dictionary you like. Invariably. the definition you find will not specify that the lynching victim be any particular race.
Now it's apparently true that more black folks have been lynched than any other race. But the 11 lynched Italian-Americans from 'Little Palermo," the nickname for New Orleans' French Quarter in 1891, are just as dead as any black lynching victim.
Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump used the word "lynching" in an analogy. Donald Trump has not actually been hung by an angry impeachment mob. But if he were, he would be just as dead as any lynched black man, and the act would be just as horrifying. That is how analogies work.
The redefinition of words is a favorite political tactic, and it irritates the hell out of me! You'll not eliminate words from my vocabulary by redefining them.

Miss Davis, my high school biology teacher, taught a pilot biology course. It was called "Blue Biology" for some reason. I, of course, hoped the "blue" was akin to "blue" movies of the time, but alas... In any case, because it was a new course, Miss Davis had to make up her own quizzes and tests. They were usually multiple choice, and invariably she would produce a question or two offering more than one correct choice. We'd spend much of the next class period arguing and convincing her she had to accept either correct answer and regrade our tests. I doubt she's still around, but, even posthumously, I hope she'll be glad I think of her whenever I see or read about Darwin and biology. And according to this video, there may be more than one correct answer to evolution.

Nervous Nancy doesn't want to have the House vote on impeachment just yet. But is there anything stopping Mitch McConnell from holding a Senate vote right now to convict or acquit? I mean, c'mon man, let's get this over!
Follow the math on this one. If the number of illegals really is 22 million, then dividing by 712,000, the average number of people in the population represented by each of 435 Congressmen, we get 30 representatives for that 22 million people. Remember that we count all people, not just legal citizens for this purpose per the Constitution. Now imagine that these 22 million have settled mostly in urban, typically Democrat-voting areas. Without even getting votes from these folks, these mostly Democrat areas get an additional 30 seats in the House of Representatives. Makes it pretty clear why Democrats tend to favor open borders, eh? https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/washington-secrets/surge-top-fed-cites-22-million-illegal-immigrants-nearly-twice-previous-tally

Fellow 2010-2014 Camaro jockeys with a worn or broken switchblade ignition key fob, I can vouch for the method I've linked here. Mine's a 2011, and the only wrinkle was that after I inserted the replacement key for the car to program it, I never got the "2 keys programmed" message shown in the video. All that happened was the security light extinguished. But I then successfully used it to start the car and exercise all the remote fob functions like lock, unlock, and remote start. GMC has a safety recall out on the switchblade key (in fact, two recalls--the first for the original key, and the second for the 10,000 or so replacement keys they kept selling on their Web site after the first recall--d'oh!), allegedly because people hit it with their knee and shut off the car while driving. My knee misses it by a mile and that hasn't happened in 8 years of driving it. So use this cheap replacement trick at your own risk. I don't recommend it; I just tell you that it works. http://www.tampabaycamaros.com/replacing-a-5th-gen-camaro-key-fob/

From today's Rock 'n' Roll Almanac:
50 years ago (1969): The Beatles, producer George Martin, and the Abbey Road engineers assemble the first rough cut of the proposed Abbey Road medley. Paul McCartney, feeling that the song Her Majesty distracts from the flow of the medley, has it removed and orders it erased. Second engineer John Kurlander, not wanting to destroy a Beatles song, instead appends it to the end of the medley tape, adding 15 seconds of leader to make sure it's kept separate. When he finds out, Paul likes the effect so much that he leaves the ending of the album just that way. It ends up being the last song WIXO in New Orleans plays before going off the air for good in September, 1974.

I'd like to dedicate some Beatles lyrics to the four Congressional socialists on Nancy Pelosi's "Squad." I hope they'll pay attention to them. They are profoundly appropriate.
You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be all right?
All right, all right
You say you got a real solution
Well, you know
We'd all love to see the plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well, you know
We're all doing what we can
But if you want money
For people with minds that hate
All I can tell is brother you have to wait
Don't you know it's gonna be all right?
All right, all right
You say you'll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it's the institution
Well, you know
You better free you mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of chairman Mao
You ain't going to make it with anyone anyhow
Don't you know it's gonna be all right?

I wasn't gonna bother posting this. The drone camera was supposed to mostly point at the Old State Capitol in downtown Red Stick (the building that Mark Twain famously hated). I planned the autonomous flight with a Web-based CCC (Curved Cable Cam) editor with eight waypoints around the building at an altitude of about 250 feet. The camera was set to look at the building as the drone worked its way around. But a bug in the editor software screwed up some of the data points and the camera ended up misaimed during part of the route. I've since fixed the data and I'll re-fly the mission later. But properly aimed or not, the 4K video looks pretty good, so here 'tis. No sound, no edits. https://youtu.be/edy2XjjCDoQ

“This is unregulated capitalism, unbridled capitalism, capitalism run amok. There are no guardrails."
"Too homogeneous. Too expensive. Too tech. Too millennial. Too white. Too elite. Too bro."

"I really enjoy the music on your station and listen to it most of the time. However, I find your political comments very offensive. Some of the jokes of T Ben Boudreauxs cross the line in my opinion. But this morning the DJ played a song by Franki Valli-Can't take my eyes off you. And following the completion of the song, he made a comment that in Joe Biden's case that would be Can't take my hands off you. I found this to be highly inappropriate. I listen to regular radio to avoid political discussions or comments. I want to hear good music. Otherwise I would choose one of the political channels. Your viewers are from both sides of the political spectrum and I would imagine I am not the only one who feels uncomfortable about this subject. I am sorry to say that despite the fact that you are in every other way a good radio station, I will not be listening anymore."
If Michael finds out I lost one of his listeners, I'll be in big trouble. And Lord help me if I fill in for him again and lose the other one! :-)

47 years ago (1972)
WIXO signs on in New Orleans at 98.5 FM.

Since the rules don't forbid it, and since I hate using Messenger, I'm changing the rules. When you think you know, use the Contact page at my Web site (http://jdthedj.com/Contact.aspx), NOT Messenger.

Riddle: It's 7:00 AM. You are asleep and there is a sudden knock on the door. Behind the door are your parents who came to have breakfast. In your fridge are bread, milk (pasteurized), juice, and a jar of jam. To answer, what will you open first?

I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one on the radio. But our American legal system never exonerates anyone, not even the President. If there's a crime, and you are charged with it and tried for it, a jury finds you either guilty or not guilty. To "exonerate" you, it would have to find you innocent, and that's not one of the available verdict choices. So Trump is wrong to say the Mueller report exonerates him. That just wasn't possible. I welcome my lawyer friends and relatives to weigh in and let me know if I'm wrong.

My suggestion to the President: Turn the full Mueller report over to Jerry Nadler and let him decide whether to release it any further. But Nadler takes the rap if he releases any Grand Jury secrets or anything classified. Whaddya think?

From the Useless Data Department, in 1840, New Orleans was the third most populous in the nation. It's peak population of 627,525 came in the 1960 census. When Bob Walker started at WTIX in 1966, it was somewhere between the #15 and #19 market. Now, with a mere 393,292, New Orleans barely hangs on to a Top 50 market rating at #49. https://www.biggestuscities.com/city/new-orleans-louisiana

Is it just me? If I want to hear Al Michaels and Chris Collinsworth on Sunday Night Football, I have to crank up the center channel of my 5.1 audio setup 5-6 dB. If I don't, they're buried in the mix with the crowd noise and theme music. This only happens on SNF. I've been doing this for the past three weeks. Skip Stewart at this past weekend's #HammondAirShow flying Prometheus, his Pitts S2-S biplane as an FMX Motocross Team bike latches on to a wing for a ride down the runway, and then flies Prometheus under the same rider jumping the bike across the runway.
A Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor showed off at this weekend's #HammondAirShow. What it shows here is an empty bomb bay. Since all bombs and missiles are carried internally, this one must be just for show. Too bad the Senate killed the F-22 program in 2009. That also shut off the supply of maintenance parts, so only about half the planes built can actually fly today. |
