WRNO's Abalon Theater

When Joe Costello owned WRNO in its “Rock of New Orleans” heyday, he was also in the movie theater business. One of his first purchases in 1978 was the Abalon Theater, 411 Opelousas Avenue on Algiers Point on New Orleans’ Westbank. It originally opened in 1951. During its WRNO days, the Abalon ran movies, and was also a concert venue for groups like Zebra and Grand Funk's Mark Farner.

How many times did you see Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show as a midnight movie? Karen O'Hara contributed this shot of the Abalon marquee for a live appearance by Tim Curry in 1979. Thanks, Karen!
